Celebrating Service

Building a Culture of Service at Mizzou

At Mizzou, service is part of who we are. To better recognize and reward our students’ commitment to volunteering, we’ve established a system for tracking verified service hours. Through this process, students can log their hours accurately, access new opportunities and earn recognition for their dedication to our campus and community.

Submit Your Volunteer Hours

Easily log your hours through our submission form.

How It Works

Students who complete verified service hours are eligible for special honors at commencement, including a recognition medallion.

Verified hours requirements (based on initial enrollment year):

  • Five Year Student | 500 verified hours
  • Four Year Student | 400 verified hours
  • Three Year Student | 300 verified hours
  • Two Year Student | 200 verified hours
  • One Year Student | 100 verified hours

Transfer students will have hour requirements adjusted based on enrollment status. If a student graduates early, hour requirements will be prorated.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is service?

Service is the voluntary commitment to act with respect for others, embrace responsibility for community well-being, pursue discovery through learning and engagement, and strive for excellence in creating meaningful, positive change. Through Leadership & Service, individuals lead by example—using their time, skills, and compassion to uplift communities and strengthen society, embodying Mizzou’s values in action.

What is philanthropy?

Philanthropy is the act of generously donating resources, such as money and time, to help improve the well-being of others or society as a whole.

What qualifies as volunteer hours?

There are two recognized times of volunteerism through our program:

Monetary donations - act(s) of service that involves any type of monetary transaction to complete the act of service. Examples: purchasing cans for canned drives, donating to Mizzou Alternative Breaks through Mizzou’s Give Direct, donating to non-profit organizations, etc.

  • Restrictions:
    • 1 can/food item donated = 0.25 hours (¼ hour)
    • $1.00 donated = 0.20 hours (⅕ hour)
    • If you are receiving goods or services in return for your monetary donation, it does NOT constitute volunteer hours.

Non-Monetary donations - act(s) of service where time, skills, and talent are utilized. Examples: giving blood, organizing yard or street clean ups, tutoring youth, visiting local community homes, etc.

  • Can I keep track of my own hours?

We highly recommend to log your hours through the form, and you can follow your service journey through MU Engage and the Get Involved Checklist.

Do I need to submit hours at a certain time period?

Yes. Please submit hours within 2 weeks after an event. This ensures enough time for any validation processes.

Do I need to enter separate hours for each service opportunity?

Yes, you will be submitting your service hours separately if you served or donated for different reasons/instances. If you have a recurring service opportunity you would like to submit, please enter those at the end and submit those hours all together.

Where do I get the lapel pins and medallions?

We will have designated days throughout the semester for you to pick up your service awards. Details will be shared to your university email after reaching a service milestone.

Where can I find service opportunities on campus and in the community?

You can visit Volunteer Opportunities for more information on how to get involved. You can also reach out to service@missouri.edu to help discover new ways to serve your Mizzou community! You can also follow Service@Mizzou on MU Engage.
